Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take to get my first gig?

This course is built so that you can be up to speed and ready for your first gig by the end of the week.
Whether you actually have that gig by the first week or not is dependent on too many factors to give a straight answer. But if you live in a major entertainment city like Los Angeles or New York, and you meet the right people, you can make it happen. But it will be up to YOU alone to make it happen. Sound Guy School will give you all the tools you need and will help you as much as possible, but in the end you should be saying to yourself “if it’s to be, it’s up to me!”

Can I live anywhere and be a successful sound guy, or do I have to live in L.A. or New York?

You can be a successful sound guy anywhere you live, as long as there is a decent size city nearby. Los Angeles is where most of the work is, followed by New York City, Atlanta, Washington D.C. area, Las Vegas, and Nashville. But you can be sure there is work to be had in any major metropolitan area that has its own local news channel!

Can I really make a good living being a Sound Guy?

YES! You’ll find out more in Module 7 of the course, but the current day rates for TV Sound Guys is anywhere from $250 a day on the low end to $600 a day or more on the high end. And that doesn’t include any gear rental income you might also receive, as well as per diem, free meals, and travel benefits for the out-of-town shows.
Plus, when you’re Sound Supervisor you make from $500 to $1,000 per day.

Am I too young or too old to start this career?

You’re never too old to start a career as a Sound Guy as long as you’re reasonably fit and able to get around well and carry some light to medium-weight equipment (15 pounds, very occasionally 30.) And as long as you’re 18 and have a driver’s license you’re not too young to get started now.

Why does the course fee give me access to the online training program for one year?

We determined that the best and easiest way to deliver the course to you would be via the internet because of its efficiency, and also because if the course came on a DVD, we wouldn’t be able to update it periodically with the most recent information, and there would be no interactivity incorporated into the program. We give you access to the online course for a year because we want you to get everything you can out of it, so we give you plenty of time. After one year, you can always re-subscribe for a discounted “alumni rate.”

Is this for men only, or why is it called “Sound GUY School” instead of “Sound PERSON School”?

We use a very loose definition of “sound guy” to mean anybody, male or female, who is trained in the field of sound and recording technology. Somehow “Sound Person School” didn’t have the same ring to it!:-)

Are there any other payment options, i.e. ways to pay on a monthly basis instead of one giant lump sum?

Yes! We offer the option of paying in three separate installments, see START TODAY! for options.
